The US Marine Corps (USMC), a.k.a.US Marines, is the maritime land force service branch of the US Armed Forces responsible for conducting expeditionary and amphibious operations. The USMC operates installations on land and aboard sea-going amphibious warfare ships around the world. Additionally, several of the Marines' tactical aviation squadrons (primarily Marine Fighter Attack squadrons) are embedded in Navy carrier air wings and operate from the aircraft carriers.
The Department of the Navy, led by the Secretary of the Navy, is a military department of the cabinet-level U.S. Department of Defense that oversees the Marine Corps and the Navy.
The Commandant of the Marine Corps is the highest-ranking officer of the Marine Corps, unless a Marine is either the chairman or vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The commandant is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and reports to the Secretary of the Navy.
The Marine Corps is organized into 4 principal subdivisions:
