Aviano airbase is a USAFE / NATO base and home to 31st Fighter Wing (FW) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c6/31st_Fighter_Wing.png operating 42 F-16C/D's in both defnsive and offensive (nuc) roles.

- 31 Ops Grp with 510 and 555 Sq (F-16C/D); 606 Air Control Sq and 31 Ops Suppt Sq
- 31 Maintenance Grp with 31 Aircraft Maintenance and Maintenace Sqns; 31 and 731 Munition Support Sqns
- 31 Mission Suppt Grp with 31 Civ Engineer, Comms; Contracting; Force Suppt; Log Readiness and Security Force Sqns
- 31 Medical Grp with 31 Airspace Medical; Dental and Medical Suppt Sqns

Base layout: Admin.,community and support area, a Cmd compound, a Flightline area, an Ammunition Storage Area, a Civil engineering complex, a Recreational area and a Decommissioned fuel railhead.
A multitude of aircraft shelters in the ops area at grid 461'43"N 1235'57"E are known to be equipped with WS3 vaults for nuc weapon storage with a max of 72 standoff weapons. These were completed in 1996 and are ops under 731 MUNitions Suppt Sq since 2001. Prior to that, all nuc weapons were stored in the special ammo storage at grid 461'32"N 1235'39"E. February, 17th of 2003 aircraft Spar92 84-0112 (cn 35A-558) brought to NATO / USAFE Ramstein Abu Omar was captured in Milan and then flown to the Ramstein Airbase in Germany.
