The Island of Gotland has a strategic location in the Baltic sea from defence viewpoint.
After withdrawal of former Swedish forces on the Island in the last decennium, reacting on recent Russian rearming and actions in some former Soviet Union republics Sweden decided to reestablish a permanent garrison at Gotland.
The Gotland Regiment http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/Gotlands_regemente_vapen.svg reactivated in 2018 and is in its build-ip phase.
Starting with an initial troop garrison, consisting primarily of Army elements (modular-structured rapid response army battalion),
In later stages eventually being exended with helicopter support and an interceptor squadron.
There are multiple military facilities at the Island from the past. Naval harbour facilities as well as airfields.
Visby airport for instance has aircraft shelters on both ends of its runway; there is an unused airfield at Bunge and some roads are to be used as emergency airstrips.
