The (Air) and (Army) National Guard units may operate in DUAL missions.

1. State Mission: operating under the respective state governors. Under state law, the National Guard provides protection of life, property and preserves peace, order and public safety. These missions are accomplished through emergency relief support during natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and forest fires; search and rescue operations; support to civil defense authorities; maintenance of vital public services and counterdrug ops.

2. Federal Mission: operating under the US president. In peacetime, the combat-ready (support) units are assigned to carry out missions compatible with training, mobilization readiness, humanitarian and contingency ops such as Operations Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. The NG provides almost half of the combat units and contains nearly all kinds of types combat support organizations capable of worldwide deployment.
