Thie unit supported USAr 56th Field Arty Bde (later Cmd) and was the helicopter airlift unit transporting and securing nuc Pershing 1 and 2 warheads to and from their depots. The unit was first stationed at Mutlangen (during Pershing 1 ops) and relocated to Göppingen when Pershing 2 was introduced.
Note: unit suffered casualties in peacetime. In August 1971 a CH-47 Chinook # 66-19023 crashed near Pegnitz at grid 49°44'26"N 11°29'49"E
In the crash 4 crewmembers, 2 officers and 31 enlisted of 2nd Batn 4th Inf, - providing security of 56th Field Arty Bde - died during an airlift operation.
The helicopter exploded and broke in 2 parts while on flight from Regensburg to Grafenwoehr and crashed near Pegnitz at 0945 hours.
Fatigue failure of the rotor blades led to its failure and structural failure of the helicopter.
