The former Soviet Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS or Semipalatinsk-21) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/86/Wfm_sts_closeup.png
This was the primary testing venue for the Soviet Union's nuclear weapons located on the steppe in northeast Kazakhstan. Scientific buildings for the test site were located around 150 km west of the town of Semipalatinsk (later Semey), near the border of East Kazakhstan.
The site comprised an area about the size of Wales. Site closure in 1991. The area is still heavily contaminated
