Until 1945 used as a Nazi luftwaffe airfield Taken over by British forces in 1945. Reassigned RAFG Ahlhorn from1950 - 1958
Base hosted various RAFG units operating Gloster Meteors; English Electric Canberras and Hawker Hunters.
Turned over to German luftwaffe in 1959 with Fighterwing 71 operating Canadair F86 Sabres until 1963 and Airliftwing 62 operating Transalls and UH1 Hueys until 1994.

From 1961-1963 the base hosted 2 nuclear armed Nike Hercules units (1/FlaRak 25 and 4/FlaRak 25) until final construction of their operational sites.
In the 1980s the base was used as a forward operating base FOL for USAFE 10th Tac Fighter Wing operating A-10s
In 1996 the German luftwaffe ceased all flying ops from Ahlhorn and the base was closed 2005 and sold to private enterprises.
