Tasking: GCI station under 1950-1981
Unit: 765 Radar Sqn
Equipment: AN/FPS-27 radar upgraded to AN/FPS-27A. Lat converted into an AN/FSS-7 submarine-launched ballistic missile radar for 14th Missile Warning Sqn (MWS) to monitor for ballistic missile launches by submarines.

765th Radar Sqn was replaced by 765th Air Defense Grp in 1970 because of Charleston AFS' status as a Backup Interceptor Control (BUIC) site. BUIC sites were alternate control sites in the event that SAGE Direction Centers became disabled and unable to control interceptor aircraft. Deactivated and replaced by 765th Radar Sqn again as defenses against manned bombers were reduced in 1984. 765th Radar Sqn deactivated 1979 as part of the transfer of the mission to Tactical Air Command. 14th MWS detachment was inactivated a year later.

Current: Charleston Correctional Facility
