Olavsvern. Former Naval Submarine Base excavated in the mountain ridge. Built during the Cold War with NATO-funding and holds tunnels into the mountain where Norwegian and allied submarines could hide or get supplies while on patrol in Arctic waters. Both American and British nuclear powered submarines used to make port calls to the base. In addition to the port facilities, the base has a 25000 square meters mountain facility including tunnels with direct access to sea for vessels. It has a dock for submarines and a helipad. Decommisioned 2005 and in reserve status.
Notice the tunnel entries in the mountain ridge at 69°32'19"N 19° 02'08"E and 69°31'56"N 19° 01'18"E
Sold 2008 to an investment group who wants to use the facility as a maintenance center for oilrigs and subsea equipment that will be drilling in the Arctic.
