This used to be the former Soviet military liaison mission (SOXMIS) location; a Soviet military observers mission which was active in the British sector in former West-Germany.
There also existed British, French and American counterparts in the Russian sector in former East-Germany; these were known as BRIXMIS, MMFL and USMLM.
SOXMIS was a base for all kinds of Soviet spy activities within the allied sectors. One of their roles was intel gathering, obesrving and testing the security of the nuclear assigned NATO units.
Strange detail: during the Cold War the British Army married officers compound at BŁnde, district Herford, NRW was also home for the Red Army's Military Liaison Mission SOXMIS! So British and Sovjet soldiers lived almost next door.
After the Cold War the British military and German cvilians moved in and nearly all military leftovers from the Soviet era was removed,
The British guard post to control Russian activities and protect the own officiers still stands, remaining unmanned.
Even today the history of this special Cold War place is fairly unknown.
