Former Da Nang joint forces base was home to
HQ US Army XXIV Corps, a corps level command in the Vietnam war (1968-1972) first located at Phu Bai until March 1970, when it relocated to Camp Horn, Da Nang. At that time it assumed control of all US ground forces in I Corps Tac Zone, with all remaining Marine units coming under its operational control until their withdrawal.
HQ XXIV Corps controlled:
- 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile); 23rd Infantry Division; 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile); 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized;); 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division; 173rd Airborne Brigade; 196th Infantry Brigade (Light); 108th Artillery Group; III Marine Expeditionary Force; 3rd Marine Amphibious Brigade and Task Force Clearwater (US Navy)
HQ III Marine Amphibious Force (1965-1971) consisting of the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Marine Division and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing.
III MAF's area of operations was in the northern I Corps Tactical Zone. III MAF participated in the Vietnam War from May 1965 – April 1971 operating from Quang Tri, Thua Thien, Quang Nam, Quang Tin, and Quang Ngai. III MAF deployed to Camp Courtney, Okinawa in April 1971
