Historical:
WW2 bobmerbase. Deactivated 1945 and refurbished for furure USAF use in 1948.
Various USAF bomber units detached (1950-1962) operating B-45 and B-66 aircraft supposed to provide tactical nuclear weapons support to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) to counter the Warsaw Pact tank divisions. Its B-45's and B-66's were capable in carrying 4 tactical B-28 bombs each.

SAC reorganized 1962 and transferred some tasks to the new USAFE command and Sculthorpe remained a reserve base until 1989.
In 1991 the former technical and domestic site was sold to The Welbeck Estate Group by Defence Estates.
The airfield area remained MoD property as an army helicopter training and exercise area.
