Shimane one of the JSDF fixed FPS-3 phased array early warning radars.
The J/FPS-3 air defence radar is a 3-D phased-array radar project, which is the main air defence/interceptor control radar of the Japanese Base Air Defence Ground Environment (BADGE) air defence system.
Each J/FPS-3 has a longrange antenna, shortrange antenna, false signal emitter, signal processing unit and an underground control system.
Flexible detection and tracking is provided through random access beam steering.
Resistance to electronic countermeasures is achieved via pulse compression, 2 wideband frequencies, low-antenna sidelobes and adaptive sidelobe cancellation.
Communication between the radar's antenna and underground control system is by means of fiberoptics.
