Former USAF site 163. Gorramendi was connected with Ringstead (UK) and Humosa (Spain) in the 486L-Medcom troposcatter comms network.
MEDiterranean COMmunications network. Spanning the Mediterranean from Spain to the Near East. A network with sites in Spain, Sardenia, Sicily, Italy, Greece, Crete and Turkey, built by the System Command's Electronic Systems Division for the European-African-Middle Eastern Communications Area for $145 million and comprising more than 6,000 route miles of communications consisting of giant troposheric scatter, line-of-sight, and microwave antennas, land lines, repeaters and multiplexing equipment for radio, teletype, facsimile and data communications. With the 490L AUTOVON switches installed, a MEDCOM user was able to use the world-wide military communications network. Prime contractor for this system was Federal Electric Corp.
