Gotthard base railway tunnel. The longest railway tunnel in the world with a length of 57 km (35.4 mi) and a total of 151.84 km (94.3 mi) of tunnels, shafts and passages. Completed and operational in 2016. Construction started 1993 with sounding drills followed by a preparational phase in 1996 and the mechanical ground excavations in 2003.Its project blueprints contained a planned connection to a new underground government leadership facility near an emergency stop station in the tunnel.
