Area use / Military Branches: Former 201 Warsaw Pact troposcatter site
Former Warsaw Pact strategic troposcatter communications site 201. BARS ( snow leopard) was a Warsaw Pact strategic military communications network . The decision to contruct this system was made 1977 and the construction period was the first half of the 80s. BARS equalled its NATO ACE high counterpart as a digital signal-network based on the troposcatter system. BARS facilities consisted of hardened above ground, semi underground and underground bunker facilities and complemented or replaced existing wireless and cable communication systems between the general staffs of all Warsaw Pact countries and the Supreme Command inthe USSR. Its techniques guaranteed connections over at least 2000kms. In case of military conflict and direct weapons effects this hardened system would be very important. BARS was ECM immune and the risk of commo interception by the enemy was low. BARS reached initial operability in 1987 and was fully ops by the end of 1988. After the fall of the iron curtain some BARS systems were demolished but others are still in military-civil use.
