Between February 1960 and February 1967, France carried out 17 atmospheric and underground nuclear tests in the Reggane and Hoggar regions and nine of these tests have been conducted after Algeria gained independence in July 1962. http://www.theafricareport.com/41067/algeria-france-urged-to-reveal-truth-about-past-nuclear-tests/

France was permitted to continue its testing programme until 1967. On paper, the testing came to an end that year. However, the former Algerian government secretly granted the French permission to continue carrying out tests in Reggane until 1986.

This used to be the former French army C.E.M.O. (Centre d'Expérimentations Militaires des Oasis): In Ekker, in the Hoggar, 150 km from Tamanrasset,
Taourirt Tan Afella was used for underground nuclear tests from 1961 to 1967. Radioactive contaminated area!
