45°48'45"N 119°25'26"W Umatilla Chemical Depot, (UMCD) based in Umatilla, Oregon, was one of the US army installations storing chemical weapons and stored apprx 12% of the US original chemical weapons consisting of various munitions and ton containers containing GB or VX nerve agent or HD blister agent.
Stockpile disposal operations were successfully concluded in 2011 using high-temperature incineration technology.
Base closure operations were expected to be completed by 2015 but these lasted unitl 2019.
As the base has operated as a storage depot for conventional munitions and chemical warfare agents several areas have been contaminated with explosives and metals as a result of past demilitarization and disposal operations. UMCD closed 2019 but the area remains off limits to the population because of chemical contaminations.
