Beale Airbase ; 456 Strategic Airspace Wing / 851 Strat Msl Sqn 1961-1966
851 SMS was equipped with HGM-25A Titan I ICBMs, with a mission of nuclear deterrence. It was the last Titan I ICBM Sqn to achieve alert status in 1961.
The missiles were deployed in a 3x3 configuration, meaning a total of 9 missiles divided into 3 bases. Each missile base had 3 ICBMs ready to launch at any given time.

In 1962, during a contractor checkout, a blast rocked launcher 1 at complex 4C at Chico (851-C), destroying a Titan I and causing heavy damage to the silo. After the investigation, USAF concluded that two separate explosions occurred because of a blocked vent and blocked valve. After repairs the Chico complex became ops again in 1963. 851 was deactivated as part of the phaseout of the Titan I ICBM in 1965 operating 3 missile sites:

851-A, 2 miles ESE of Lincoln, California, 3852′54″N 12115′56″W
851-B, 4 miles NNE of Sutter Buttes, California, 3916′33″N 12149′26″W
851-C, 6 miles N of Chico, California, 3949′05″N 12151′10″W
