Naval Receiving Facility Northwest at 36°33'27"N 76°15'38"W
The Naval Security Group Activity Northwest was located in Chesapeake VA and a high-security intelligence base that monitored radio and other communications traffic from around the world. Originally, each of the Naval Security Group elements functioned as separate divisions within NAVCOMMSTA Norfolk. In 1966, a reorganization took place and all divisions were brought together under one department. In 1970 disestablishment of the Naval Radio Station (R) Northwest and redesignated Naval Receiving Facility Northwest coordinating and providing multi-service support.
The complex consists of
- the (removed) Circular Dipole Antenna Array (CDAA) high frequency direction finder at Lat 36°32'58N Long 76°15'29W
- a triangulation station at Lat 36°33'52N Long 76°16'12W
- SATCOM facility (Relay Rd) at Lat 36°33'37N Long 76°16'1W
- radar faclilites (Shotgun Rd) at Lat 36°33'6N Long 76°15'54W and (Farmhouse Rd) at Lat 36°33'31N Long 76°15'3W
