Until 1969 personnel have been trained according to Soviet military doctrine. Mass parachute ops and defense of points of interest until the arrival of main ground forces. In the 1980's the unit began to focus on training in small reconnaissance groups, inserted in enemy territory to carry out specialized missions.
601 SF Grp took part in many foreign ops (UNPROFOR, IFOR, SFOR, KFOR, AFOR, the Gulf Wars and Afghanistan).
