Former RAF Edzell, Brechin UK (scotland). WW2 aircraft maintenace base. Reopened 1959 and leased by US Navy. Established in 1959; NSGA Edzell commenced ops and was officially commissioned on July 6, 1960. NSGA Edzell maintained and operated a hi-freq direction finding (HFDF) facility and provided communications support to Navy and other DoD and NATO elements. The communications facility at Edzell included an ops building located in the center of an AN/FRD-10A Circularly Disposed Antenna Array (CDAA), also known as a Wullenweber antenna array. The CDAA ceased ops in 1997 and was removed. The property was returned to the UK. NSGA Edzell and its tenant activities encompassed approximately 807 military personnel and 900 family members. NSGA Edzell closed in 1997 after 37 years of US Navy HFDF ops.
USAF 17th Space Surveillance Squadron was also located at RAF Edzell. Its activity ceased in 1998. Mission and functions transferred to the 5th Space Surveillance Squadron, at RAF Feltwell.
