Büchel airbase. Homebase of Jagdbombergeschwader 33 (fighter bomber sqn 33).
This was the former USAFE Special Ammo Storage for the base. Current status: reserve.
The base has 11 Protective Aircraft Shelters (PAS) equipped with WS3 vaults for nuclear weapons (max.capacity 44) and is currently together with Spangdahlem the remaining locations in Germany where still operational nuclear weapons are being stored.
It is estimated that 22 B61 bombs are stored here for possible delivery by German PA-200 Tornado IDS bombers.
The base also hosts USAF 702nd Munitions Support Squadron which is responsible for receipt, storage, maintenance and control of US special weapons in support of the German Air Force 33rd Fighter-Bomber Wing. The squadron directly supports NATO's strike mission. The units strength is appx 140 military divided into 5 flights consisting of maintenance, ops, comms, custody and mission support. The squadron area consists of a mission support area, a community support center, a unit activity center, mess facility and fitness center. For other support the unit relies on 52 FW at Spangdahlem airbase.
