There has been a French SIGINT station on Mayotte since at least the 1970's, which at the time was focused on intercepting radio traffic from the Middle East, Near East, Africa, and South Asia. In the 1990s, plans were made for a SATCOM intercept station on the French island of Mayotte in conjunction with the German BND. Construction took 5 years and ops started in 1998,
The site is on the flank of the Dziani Dzaha volcano, with the ops center on the tiny island of Petite-Terre adjacent to the Foreign Legion (See FL Mayotte).
Mayotte SIGINT began covering comms traffic from Africa, the Middle East and Asia passing through satellites parked in orbit over the Indian Ocean.
