US special forces used the airfield as a base between 2001 and 2006 for actions in Afghanistan.
In 2009 media reports alleged that the airfield was used by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as a base for Predator drone attacks on militants in Pakistan's Federally administered tribal areas. In february 2009, The London Times announced that it had obtained Google Earth images showing Predator aircraft parked outside a hangar at the end of the runway.

December 11th 2011 -- Pakistani security forces took control of a Shamsi airbase in Washak district of Balochistan province after US military personnel vacated the facility in line with a demand from the government of Pakistan.
