A former satellite tracking station operated by both Australia (ASD) and US consisting of a computer complex and 18 radomes protecting the dish antennas.
It has 900 employees and a signinficant number of CIA as well as military NAVSECGRU staff.
The site is in Australia officially called the Joint Defence Space Research Facility and it is believed to be one of the largest ECHELON ground stations; appears to be physically and operationally similar to the American SIGINT facilities at Buckley Airbase, Colorado and Menwith Hill, UK.
US government personnel at Pine Gap are believed to be mostly from the National Security Agency.
Officially known in the USA as NAVDET Combined Suppt. Group, Pine Gap until 2005; then reassigned NAVIODET Alice Springs NT AS.
