Woomera Prohibited Area http://www.defence.gov.au/woomera/about.htm
Large weapons-testing range in South Australia (roughly the size of the UK) with its south-eastern corner located approximately 450 kms (280 mi) north north-west of Adelaide. Woomera Prohibited Area has an area of 127,000 square kms (49,000 sq mi) and is the largest land-based defence and aerospace range in the world. The town of Woomera was established to serve the people working at the Prohibited Area. Stuart Highway passes through the Prohibited Area and travellers may not leave the road and enter the zone.
In the 1955-1963 years British nuclear tests were held at Maralinga site, part of the Woomera Prohibited Area where tests were performed, with appx. yields ranging from 1 to 27 kilotons. The site was also used for hundreds of minor trials, many of which were intended to investigate the effects of fire or non-nuclear explosions on atomic weapons. The site was heavily radioactive contaminated and an initial cleanup was attempted in 1967 followed by another cleanup which was completed in 2000. Better stay away there!
