Former RAF Catfoss, an old WW2 airbase was also home of RAF III (Thor) Strategic Missile Group - 226 SMS Alpha 4 1958-1963.
See Driffield for further information about the Thor missile system.
In 1958 the Thor intermediate range ballistic missiles were stationed on the base and concrete launch site were built in the centre of the airfield.
The launchers still can be seen appx 0,5 km due South of this point.
After the missiles were withdrawn from service in 1963 the airfield was abandoned.
