The US Coastguard (USCG) http://www.uscg.mil/ is the maritime security, search and rescue, and law enforcement service branch of the US Armed Forces. USCG is a humanitarian and a security service protecting the US borders and economic and security interests abroad; and defends its sovereignty by safeguarding sea lines of communication and commerce across territorial waters and its Exclusive Economic Zone.

In peacetime the USCG operates under the US Department of Homeland Security. At war, it can be transferred in whole or in part to the US Department of the Navy under the Department of Defense by order of the US president or by act of congress.
