An airport near Misratah also acting as a combined airbase and training center for the Libyan air force operating from here with Q5 Fantans and Soko G-2 Galebs extensively in both training and counterinsurgency capacity.

The first Libyan aircraft challenging the no-fly zone during the 2011 Libyan uprising was a Q-5 from Misurata which was reported shot down by the French Air Force. A few hours later an armed forces spokesman specified that another plane was destroyed on the runway with an AASM air-to-ground missile just before taking off.
