Kilo class is the diesel-electric submarine designed by St. Petersburg-based Rubin Central Maritime Design Bureau. Intended mainly for anti submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) roles and capable of general reconnaissance, water mine laying and patrol missions. PLA Navy became the first foreign customer for the improved Project 636 submarines with 4 boats of this variant ordered from Russia. These boats were delivered in 1997 and 1998. All 8 Kilo class submarines are deployed in the submarine base of the East Sea Fleet at Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province.
Yuan class next generation of Chinese 039A SSG. The first boat of this class was launched in 2004 at Wuhan Shipyard. Its design appears to have drawn some features from both 039G and Kilo types. The submarine has a 039G style sail with diving planes. However a raised "hump" on top of the teardrop shaped hull clearly suggests a Kilo influence. Its displacement has been estimated to be 3,600t dived.
Yuan class are aslos stationed at Zhoushan and could pose a credible force to counter US and Taiwanese naval forces.
