History:
US Army Garrison (USAG) Bamberg consisted of Warner Bcks & Bamberg Army Airfield.
Early units (1960's and 1970's): 1/3 Airdef, 1st and 2nd Batn 52nd Mech Inf, 1st Batn 70 Armour, 6/1 Field Arty (VII Corps), 5th and 6th Batn 72nd Field Arty. 2nd Sq 2ACR, 7th Engineers Bde, 82nd Eng Batn, 3/7 ADA, 501 CAB, 101 Ord Batn, Hq OPs,

Later the garrison was homebase of 173rd Airborne Brigade Support Batn; 16th Special Troops Batn/16th Sustainment Bde; 54th Engineers Batn; 793rd MP Batn/18th MP Bde; 1002nd MP Batn. (CID) and supporting units.
Bamberg AAF was former homebase of US Army 1st Armored Division's 501st Combat Aviation Btn (1985-1991) flying AH-1 Cobra's and UH-1 Huey's, As of 2004, the airfield supported USEUCOM ops but already largely used by civil aviation on the western part of the airfield. Only recently the runway has been extended. Current status: Bamberg AAF is nowadays part of Breitenau airport.
Due to Obamas forces reductions in 2012 the decision was made to deactivate and close USAG Bamberg.
Closure of the garrison was september 2014.
All units relocated to Italy or deactivated.

Note the early (1960's) Special Ammo Storage at grid 4954'55"N 1057'37"E. Storage has been used for nuc 203mm/8inch W33 (SP) and 155mm (SP) grenades. The other bunkers south of this stored conventional MRLS rockets.
