Schimatari Tanagra airbase (LGTG)

An intermidiate organisation supervising of factory maintenance schedules effectuation of aircraft, helicopters’, jet engines, telecommunication means and constructions and managing the procedures that ensure proper Quality Control.
Between 1956 - 1999 the base operated many units and aircraft. 114 CW established at Tanagra with 341, 342 and 343 Intercept Sqns. 361 Training Sq with T-33A Shooting Stars. 335 Sq with F-84F Thunderstreaks switching to (T)F-104G Starfighters. 336 Fighter Bomber Sq with (T)F-104Gs. 342 Sq reroled 342 All Weather Sq, with (T)F-102A Delta Daggers, reroling again on Mirage F-1CGs. 366 Training Flight formed with T-33A Shooting Stars. In 1988 Mirage 2000EGs. In 1989 332 AW Sq was equipped with Mirage 2000EGs and Mirage 2000BGs. The Mirage F-1CGs retired after 28 years and 342 AW Sq disbanded.
The nuclear deterrence mission has been established in 1961 after the "sheepskin" agreement between the US and Greece. This implied existence of initial nuclear sites at Elevsis for US Army grenades and missile warheads kept in custody for Greek Army while USAF freefall bombs have been stored at Souda, Tanagra and Araxos airbase. Tanagra had a large USAF special storage facility at grid 38°19'22"N, 23°34'7"E and a nuclear QRA at grid 38°20'0"N 23°34'52"E (1970-1984). All decommissioned 1988.
