Former RAF Coltishall, a WW2 airbase. In the 1950s designated a V-Bomber dispersal base. Used to be home to a variety of units and aircraft including de Havilland Mosquito, Gloster Javelin, English Electric Lightning and from 1963 the "Historic Aircraft Flight" (a.k.a.Battle of Britain Memorial Flight).
The last Lightnings left Coltishall in 1974 and were replaced by SEPECAT Jaguars. The first Jaguar squadron, No. 54 Sqn, arrived at Coltishall in 1974. The Jaguars came from the frontline RAFG stations when these were reroled to F-4 Phantoms initially and later to Panavia Tornados.
RAF Coltishall was exclusively a Jaguar base from then on and its Jaguars participated in the 1991 Gulf War Operation Granby and Operation Warden, without sustaining a single loss of man or machine and in subsequent operations over Balkans (Operation Deny Flight) and then later Iraq once more!
Due to budget cuts RAF Coltishall closed in 2006 at the outphasing of the Jaguars.
