Loring AFB Defense Area. Maine.
4 Nike Ajax sites were placed around Loring AFB for protection of the SAC B-52 Stratofortresses.
HQ facilities were at Loring Airbase. Manned by the Regular Army 3rd Missile Battalion, 61st Air Defense Artillery, these sites provided defense for Loring and the northeastern approaches to the USA. Later, sites L-13 and L-58 underwent conversion from Ajax to Hercules missiles.
An Air-Defense Command Post (AADCP) was established at Caswell AFS, ME for Nike missile command-and-control functions. It was designed for manual ops, using plexiglass plotting boards and telephonic inputs. The ADCP was later integrated with the USAF Air Defense Command/NORAD Semi Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) air defense radar network with FPS-10 (2); FPS-8/GPS-3; FPS-7C and FPS-6A radars.
