Vis Island. is very strategically located in the Adriatic sea.
In WW2 the Island has been occupied by the Italian armed forces who laid all kinds of mines all over the place (1941- 1943).
Tito's partisan force liberated the Island and a British flotilla has been stationed.until 1944 and Tito's Hq has been located there for a while..
The Island has also extensively been used as a FOB by RAF bombers and fighters (1944-1945)
After the war the Yugoslav armed forces used the Island as a main naval base until its closure in 1989
The Island has a large underground bunker and tunnel system and an inlet for submarines.
Some parts are still marked as exclusion areas because of the presence of WW2 explosives and mines!
