Kohassa Naval Air Stn. established as Naval Air Station (NAS) Shibpur in 2001 as a Forward Operating Base (FOB) for enhanced surveillance in North Andaman. Currently Dornier Do 228 aircraft and HAL Chetak (Alouette 3) helicopters (Navy and Coast Guard) use Shibpur once a week.
In addition, IAF operates its Dornier aircraft between Port Blair and Diglipur weekly for courier duties. In 2009, the length of the runway has been extended to 12,000 ft enabling day and night ops when needed.
