Main operating base Peshawar / Peshawar Intl.Airport (OPPS) is split in 2 separate parts. Both using the same runway system.
The civil airport consists of an arrivals/departures hall and parking aprons (SE side of the airfield).
The rest of the airfield is a Main Operatig Base, hosting Pakistani AIr Force, 36th Attackwing with:
-16 sq
-26 sq (both with A-5 Fantan, F-7 Chengdu)
- helicopterunit.
Historical fact:
In 1960 a USAF U-2 spyplane, flown by CIA pilot Gary Powers, left Peshawar airbase for a recceflight over the Soviet Union; the plane was shot down and the pilot was captured and put on trial in the Soviet Union. This event triggered the U-2 Crisis of 1960.
