Morón was one of 3 USAF Cold War airbases in Spain. Its flightline, underground aircraft refueling system, long runway and location on the Iberian peninsula close to the Mediterranean, Africa and the Middle East, made the base a vital link in any operation to the eas.
USAF 3973d Strategic Wing was assigned to Morón conducting Reflex ops. The 30 hydrogen bombs used in the Reflex ops have been stored at grid 37° 9'22"N 5°36'53"W. Morón operated primarily as a Reflex base until 1966 but it came to an end at the request of the Spanish government after the crash of a nuclear armed B-52 near Palomares.
- ALA 11 (11 wing) with a fighter / interceptor group (Grp 11) with 111 and 113 Sqn. (OCU) operating EF-2000 Typhoon
- 1 ASW/Maritime patrol group (Grp 22) with P-3M ORION
The base is still equipped to hosts USAFE units.
