RAF Kinloss ; former WW2 training airbase. Disbanded by RAF 1946 and turned over to RN serving as School of Maritime Reconnaissance until 1965.As of 1966-1972 anti-submarine duties, locating and shadowing Russian naval units. 972 Station transferred back to RAF hosting: - the Nimrod force http://www.combataircraft.com/aircraft/snimr.aspx - Defence High Frequency Communications Service (see 6.MoD DHFCS Forest Moor for more info) - RAF Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) http://www.combataircraft.com/aircraft/hseaking.aspx In 2009 MoD announced retirement of the Nimrod MR2 by 2010 and delayed introduction of the Nimrod MRA4. In 2010 the MR4 was cancelled completely. 120 and 201 squadrons and 42(R) squadron (OCU), equipped with Nimrod MR2, disbanded 2011 and in 2012 the base transferred to the British army - reassigned Kinloss Barracks - becoming home of 39 Engineer Regiment providing engineer support to RAF and Land Forces.
